10 Things To Do

1. Recycle.

The average American uses seven trees a year in paper, wood, and other products made from trees. This amounts to about 2 billion trees per year! Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to run a TV for three hours – or the equivalent of half a gallon of gasoline.

2. Change a bulb.

If every American home replaced just one light bulb with an ENERGY STAR qualified bulb, we would save enough energy to light more than 3 million homes for a year, more than $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions of more than 800,000 cars.

3. Take shorter showers. Conserve water.

Even a one or two minute reduction can save up to 700 gallons of water per month. Installing water-saving shower heads or flow restrictors saves an additional 500 to 800 gallons per month.

4. Reduce plastic use. Recycle used plastic.

There is an enormous amount of plastics in the ocean, including “The Garbage Patch” in the Pacific Ocean that spans an area twice the size of Texas. Go to www.algalita.org to find out more.

5. Buy hybrid cars and other energy-saving things.

The Toyota Prius gets 46 miles a gallon and produces 70% fewer smog-forming emissions than the average new vehicle. If every U.S. household and business replaced old computers with new ENERGY STAR qualified models, we would save more than $1.8 billion in energy costs over the next five years and avoid greenhouse gas emissions equivalent to more than 2.7 million cars.

6. Eat local or organic foods.

The ten most important organic foods to eat are: Baby Food, Strawberries, Rice, Oats, Milk, Bell Peppers, Bananas, Green Beans, Peaches, and Apples.

7. Clean green.

There are safe alternatives to chemical-based household cleaners. They use packaging made of polyethylene and polypropylene plastics, which are 100% recyclable.

8. Turn down the heat. Turn out the lights.

Turn out the lights in parts of the house that you aren't using and open the blinds instead of hitting the light switch.  Also, wear layers or a hoodie instead of heading right for the heater. These are little things that go a long way.

9. Plant a tree.

During a 50-year life span, one tree will generate $30,000 in oxygen, recycle $35,000 worth of water, and clean up $60,000 worth of air pollution. That's $125,000 total per tree, not including its other values!

10. Speak up! Vote green!

Use your voice to spread the word and to elect people who can make a global impact with their actions.
